Brief History

The JavaPOS committee was initiated by Sun, IBM, Epson and NCR. Participation is open to interested companies.

The JavaPOS Committee now operates as part of the NRF-ARTS UnifiedPOS Standard's Committee. See www.NRF-ARTS.org for more information on the standards.

To date, the following companies among others have been participated at JavaPOS meetings: JCPenny, Sears, Home Depot, NCR, IBM, Sun Microsystems, Epson, Wincor Nixdorf, Fujitsu, Datafit, MGV, Ultimate Technology, RCS, Triversity, 360Commerce, Star Micronics, BearingPoint, TPG, OPOS-J, Toshiba-Tec, Bizerba.

November JavaPOS v1.14 Device Controls are released.

July 30 JavaPOS v1.6 standard is released.
June 1 Source Code for Version 2.0 of the Java Configuration Loader is released (JCL 2.0.0 RC2). See JCL FAQ
May 22 JavaPOS-15 is held in Longbeach California with Epson hosting.
March 6 JavaPOS-Japan joins "Retail Tech Japan 2001" exhibiting both Windows and Linux based JavaPOS solutions.
February 22-23 JavaPOS-14 is held in Washington DC with the NRF hosting.


Year 2000

December 1 JavaPOS Technical Seminar #2 completed. The 35 companies represented included new members Fujitsu, NEC, JBCC, RSI and Star Micronics.
October 6 JavaPOS v1.5 standard released for comments.
April 29 Source code for the Java Configuration Loader (JCL) is released. See JCL FAQ
April 14-15 JavaPOS-13 is held in Chicago with IBM hosting.
March 2 Publication of the Java Configuration Loader (JCL) API, for defining configuration, binding and loading of JavaPOS Device Services.

This API supercedes the earlier JSL/JSD API's within the JavaPOS standard.
January 19 JavaPOS was recognized as the official Java platform mapping of the UnifiedPOS standard of the National Retail Federation (NRF).
January 16-17 JavaPOS-12 was held in New York City, with the National Retail Federation (NRF) hosting.


Year 1999

July 3 Java Device Driver Kit FCS Candidate 2 Release made available.
June 7-10 JavaPOS-11 was held in Chicago with Sears hosting.
March 30 JavaPOS v1.4 standard released for comments.
February 10-12 JavaPOS-10 was held in Dallas with J.C. Penny hosting.


Year 1998

November 6JavaPOS v1.3 standard released for comments.
October 26-28JavaPOS-9 was held in Chicago with Sears hosting.
August 10-12JavaPOS-8 was held in Palo Alto with Sun hosting.
April 20-22JavaPOS-7 was held in Houston with Telxon hosting.
March 28JavaPOS v1.2 standard released.
February 2-6JavaPOS-6 was held in San Deigo with ICL/Fujitsu hosting.


Year 1997

December 24The JavaPOS whitepaper is published in its updated form.
December 22JavaPOS Guide for Application and Device Programmers is published for public review.
December 5Prototype version of JavaPOS whitepaper is published.
October 27-30JavaPOS-5 was held in Palo Alto, with Sun hosting.
September 16-18JavaPOS-4 was held in Raleigh, with IBM hosting.
August 11-13JavaPOS-3 was held in Atlanta, with NCR hosting.
June 9-12JavaPOS-2 was held in Palo Alto, with Sun hosting.
April 29-30The first industry-wide meeting, JavaPOS-1, was held in Raleigh, with IBM hosting.
